Construction Set to Begin on New Cycle and Pedestrian Bridge Across Shannon in Athlone


Building of a brand new pedestrian and cycleway bridge throughout the Shannon Navigation in Athlone will begin on Tuesday 3 Could, Waterways Ireland confirms.

The greenway bridge is funded from a €8.1 million allocation to the Galway-to-Dublin Greenway and can be constructed some 50 metres upstream of Athlone city bridge.

The navigation channel within the neighborhood of the in-water works can be restricted to a width of 15 metres from 3 Could. Each side of the navigation channel can be buoyed with non permanent makers.

Giant barges, workboats and different tools can be working within the navigation from Wansboro’s discipline (upstream of the railway bridge) to Athlone city bridge.

Masters of vessels are suggested to proceed with extra warning within the neighborhood of the works and to comply with the directions of security craft and personnel within the space.

Section 1 of the venture commencing in Could includes the set up of a cofferdam which is able to take round 4 weeks to finish. Waterways Eire says it would advise particulars of additional phases in the end.
